Alcohol involved in fatal Corozal accident

Another accident in Corozal Town claimed the life of a seventy-one year old man of Ranchito Village. Around one-thirty on Saturday morning, police were called out to the junction of Paraiso Village and the Northern Highway, where they saw a back hoe on the side of the road and an extensively damaged car on the opposite side. Sitting behind the steering wheel inside the car was Cecil Anthony Garbutt, suffering from severe head and body injuries. He was transported to the Corozal Community Hospital where he died. Reports are that Garbutt was driving when he collided into the back hoe and overturned. Police have since arrested and charged the driver of the back hoe, forty-six year old Cecil Lewis of San Andres Village. Lewis was slapped for the offences of driving motor vehicle without due care and attention, driving motor vehicle with alcohol concentration above prescribed limit, causing death by careless conduct and manslaughter by negligence.

Maybe we need harsher, mandatory jail time for driving after drinking. And loss of the vehicle, too. It’s not a party.

  2. true Belizean says:

Wow what a quick response to charging the driver. So tell me now, has Ian Vega been charged yet?

  3. LA says:

    Thinkless driver…..!

  4. ceo says:

A back Hoe does not mover very fast. So why was the back hoe driver get charged and so quickly? A thorough examination of the scene could not be done so quickly. The guy that dies could he be at fault and contributed to his death? I would bet that he was speeding and driving recklessly like most Belizeans do! No distance in belize is far but yet everyone drives recklessly even if they are going two miles down the road!

  5. nimbo says:

Second @true Belizean. What about Ian Vega. Did not see even the inside of the cell.

  6. Solutions says:

If you intend to drink, stay safe and don’t drive. Our media houses must stop reporting drunk driving as “driving over the prescribed limit”. The only safe driving limit is zero (0). Let us call drunk drivers exactly what they are “DRUNKS”. Media houses, re-word your reporting…….. Mr. John Doe was arrested for driving drunk. (period) . Then let Mr. John Doe go out and find a very expensive lawyer to prove a “prescribe limit” case.
