Regional track meet scheduled for weekend
This weekend Belize will be overrun with athletes as competitors from all over Central America are expected to participate in the first ever CADICA Regional Cross Country Competition. The track and field event is being hosted by the Belize Amateur Athletic Association and this afternoon President Josephine Flowers, told us what to expect.
Josephine Flowers, Pres., Belize Amateur Athletic Assn.
“It will include teams from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Belize. It’s actually for youths, juniors, and open. We are going to have races from four thousand meters up to twelve thousand metres.”
Kendra Griffith
“Where will all this be happening?”
Josephine Flowers
“In Lord’s Bank at the B.D.F. housing project field. It’s right behind the B.D.F. housing project.”
Kendra Griffith
“How many Belizeans will be participating?”
Josephine Flowers
“Well, we had hoped to host the full team, which would have been twenty-four, but we are now down to about twelve, so we should have somebody in each category. The most promising category is the open category, because we have seasoned athletes and they are used to running these distances.”
Kendra Griffith
“Anybody in particular we should be looking out for?”
Josephine Flowers
“Well we have Louis Haulze, he has been around a long time, we have Victor Martin, and most of our open athletes are from the B.D.F. and you know they are the only ones who have been hosting half marathons and marathons, so they are used to it. That’s part of their regiment.”
The competition starts at seven a.m. on Saturday and the athletes will be competing on a specially constructed two thousand metre track in Lord’s Bank Village.
