P.U.P. looks up George Price on Service Day

Before the schools set out on their initiatives, early this morning National Service Day started with a mass in Belmopan City as a tribute to George Price. Leader of the Opposition Francis Fonseca said that after the mass some of the participants travelled to Belize City and placed wreaths at Price’s tomb inside Lord Ridge Cemetery.

“We need to commend the George Price Center for Peace and Development. This whole idea of a national service day really originated with them and I think it is very important for us as a national to set aside a day in which we could recognize and pay tribute—if you like—to the legacy and life of George Price. And obviously September nineteenth, today, marks the first anniversary of his death and the George Price Center for Peace and Development thought it was fitting that we observe that day as a part of the National September Celebrations as National Service Day. When they wrote us, we were very quick to embrace that idea because obviously George Price was our great leader, the father of our nation. And we thought it was very fitting, for us as a party, to try and do as much as we could across the country to carry out works that would reflect the spirit of George Price. His legacy of service to this country is well documented so it was easy for us to embrace and I’m very, very pleased with the outpouring of support we’ve gotten across the country—just about every constituency in the country is involved in some level of community service, some level of activity; serving the public today. Here in Freetown, as you can see, we are building a fence for one of our community members on St. Thomas Street. as well we are carrying out some cleanup projects in the Belama Area.”
