Stabbed to death in Guinea Grass, Orange Walk

In an otherwise peaceful section in the north of the country, another person was murdered. Fifty-six year old Manuel Cruz was viciously killed in Guinea Grass Village on Sunday morning, while socializing at a local bar.  Cruz and another unnamed man were standing in front of Bai Li Shop on the main road when he was allegedly attacked by thirty-four year old Fidencio Camara, who stabbed him on the chest and hand.  Cruz reportedly walked away from the scene of the incident but was pursued by Camara.  The knife-wielding attacker then proceeded to stab Cruz a total of eleven times to the back, chest and arms.  Orange Walk Police visited the area around eleven-thirty a.m. where they discovered Cruz’s body lying face down in a pool of blood, approximately forty yards from where they were drinking.  He was transported to the Northern Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.  Fidencio Camara has since been detained in connection with Cruz’s murder.

I wasn’t aware of that background, but in this case I don’t think revenge killing was justified.

In the former case, our justice system more or less worked, the killer was caught, convicted, and went to prison for 7 years. [I think the system worked better back in the 80’s, fewer murders to solve, less corruption.]

So now the revenge may be understandable, but it is still murder.

Had this killing occurred before an arrest and conviction, or if the criminal system failed entirely as it does so often today, my feeling might be different. And if it had been my family member who had been killed first, the law might not have mattered to me, but I would be prepared to pay the price for any vengeance I took. A sad case in many ways.
