Cowo takes Mountain Bike Race
Good evening. I’m James Adderley, and we warmly welcome you to this portion of Sports Monday. The F.F.B.’s five thousand knockout tournament kicked off its two game championship series yesterday inside the Carl Ramos Stadium.
We’re down South in Dangriga as the Revolutionary Conquerors play host to mighty Sugar Boys Juventus of Orange Walk with so much at stake.
Blasting out of the starting blocks, the home team looks to hurt the visitors real early only to see Venautio Sutherland shut down the early attempt.
The Conquerors continue the pressure and we’re certain that Damian Serano didn’t intend to hit the crossbar.
On this trip into the O.W.’s zone the Conquerors set up Peter Metro Mariano who can’t get it past Sutherland.
At the other end the soggy pitch ends Christopher Hendricks on this run and guess what Woodrow West almost fumbles an easy play.
On this play, West more than mashes up for his near fumble by shopping a most potent header from O.W. captain Christopher Hendricks.
Sugar Boys Juventus is truly alive now as Deon Flowers fires this right foot that skates dangerous in front of West’s goal mouth.
Dangriga then getsits turn to press dangerously. Unfortunately for them, Gilberto Swazo slips down this charge piece.
Just before the half expires Deon Flowers gets this full chance to give O.W. the lead but he misses the target.
Folks we’re fifty-five minutes into the ballgame when this long pass from Ivan Argalles should have been handled by West, who misplays, so Christopher Hendricks steps up to give Sugar Boys the 1-zip lead.
Four minutes later the South strikes back, Sutherland of O.W. fumbles in goal. Kareem Haylock, who is having an M.V.P. type outing today—pounces on the ball to tie the score at one a piece.
For sure people Juventus gets help from the Griga defence on this press but they still fail to break the tie.
In the meantime it is Jacinto Bermudez’s turn to punch the scoreboard, but he squanders the open look.
So who will break the tie, Young Clifton West of O.W. makes the attempt but all he does is bother Woodrow West.
Who does do the damage is Gilbert Swazo at the seventy-eighth minute with this studied right foot push and the Conquerors are up 2-1.
The visitors almost come up with the quick equalizer foiled only by the ability of Woodrow West to reject the header from Clifton West and we don’t know if they are related.
It’s more Dangriga when Jacinto Bermudez makes up for his earlier misses with this wicked right foot that leaves Sutherland standing—the Revolutionary Conquerors post the 3-1 big W in a game one of this F.F.B. championship series.
Game two now comes up this Sunday January twenty-eight at the People’s Stadium O.W. The Sugar Boys Juventus will have to win by three goals to wrest the title from the Revolutionary Conquerors. It’s a double header card this Sunday with Lake I taking on Hankook Verdes at two p.m. on the under card for the third place prize.
Turning to the cycling scene thirty-four takers came out for the fifty mile Mountain Bike Race staged on the Western Highway on the Burrel Boom Circuit yesterday and they’re off on a lead out because of the bad road conditions.
At mile eleven it’s a three man breakaway featuring Dan Zelaya and Paul Trapp.
Dan Zelaya is the one who showed the determination to take the station prize at mile fourteen.
This causes Paul Trapp to go at it alone. So he breaks out of the pack to take the premier at Boom cut-off, which is the turn around point.
On the way back Cebaldo Cowo steps out to lead a breakaway pack of four. But the pace proves too much for Paul Trapp who cramps up and has to slow down.
We must tell you though people the three man lead continues to roll towards the finish line.
However, by the time finish line comes in sight, the solitary figure of Cebaldo Cowo dominates the scene, and he rides in for an uncontested first place.
The sprint for second place is a heated one. Kirk Trapp those find the power to hold off Edmund Camal, who has to settle for third.
Paul Trapp recovers enough to claim fourth place, while George Henry rounds out the top five. Folks we’ll go to seven this time as Andrew Brown burns Santino for sixth place keeping Santino out of the money on this one. The next Mountain Bike rave is set for February twenty-fifth, so stay tuned.
Finally people the National Triathlon Association in conjunction with the Belize Tourism Board presented a triathlon event yesterday at the Sunlighters Promenade. In the individual side Justin Usher of Edward P. Yorke High School took top honours in the 12-15 years category; in the individual sprint level it was Libardo Bru who took top honours and Jamie Lee Usher proved number one in the female class. In the corporate relay Suzie Mawer, Allison Trapp and Richard Mawer combined lead BATSUB to the big prize and we say congratulations. Leopards finished second and third went to Dyno Dips.
Hey folks that is our show for today. We invite you back, same time, same place next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
