Committee of 5 says citrus deal was fast & loose

Story PictureThere is no present, no future; only the past repeating itself again and again. I’m not sure who said that but the quote certainly applies to Belize’s citrus industry. Just as a compromise seemed to have been brokered between opposing factions of the Citrus Growers Association, events have transpired to once again sow distrust and dissention. The controversy involves implementation of recommendations by the Committee of Five that were approved by a special general meeting of the C.G.A. in October. Those recommendations set out specific amendments to a contract signed to sell a forty-six percent stake in C.G.A. owned Citrus Products of Belize Limited to Banks Holdings of Barbados. The amending of the contract was supposed to be supervised by the committee but it seems the company’s directors went ahead and did the deal on their own. Now the committee says that while many of the mandated changes were made, some were not. Committee Secretary Tony Chanona explains.
