Businessman David Gegg avoids prison by paying some of his GST

Businessman David Gegg, owner of Discovery Expedition and Cruise Solutions Limited, made an appearance in court this morning after eluding the GST on Tuesday.  The GST had issued a committal warrant for Gegg for a hefty sum of two hundred and six thousand plus dollars in unpaid taxes. But this morning at nine o’clock, Gegg in the company of not one but two attorneys made his way to the courtroom of Magistrate Dale Cayetano. The warrant was lifted when Gegg worked out a payment with the commissioner of GST.  In court Gegg’s attorney, Andrew Marshalleck inquired specifically what owed Gegg owed.   GST representative, Jaclyn Meighan informed the court that in respect of Cruise Solutions there were unpaid taxes of one hundred and eleven thousand, five hundred and thirty dollars and for Discovery Expedition, the pending taxes are one hundred and fifty-two thousand, five hundred and eighty-four dollars. There are also arrears of fifty-six thousand, five hundred and eighty-four dollars Cruise Solutions, and eighty-nine thousand, nine hundred and twelve thousand dollars for Discovery Expedition; which Gegg had agreed to pay in September 2011, but did not. In court today, Gegg is to reappear in court on February fifteenth, 2013 at which time, according to his attorney, the payments would be honored in full and the matter will be settled. Marshalleck was joined by Priscilla Banner.

  1. Ricky Malthus says:

This government is incompetent to analyze and see the bad and disastrous economic effects of GST so it is useless to point this out. I keep repeating that GST must be repealed because it is a tax that is unnecessary since taxes have been paid already on these goods and services. This GST power in the hands of politicians becomes abusive in the hands of our corrupt politicians who are not well trained to understand the destabilizing effects on our very tiny economy. The only thing the politicians can see is a dollar in their pockets. The process is well underway to supplant everything and everyone in Belize with newcomers. Understand that, Belizeans, if you can.

  2. Tina says:

Maybe Gegg could sell his Hummer and the wife’s fancy SUV and pay his taxes, no sympathy at all thinks he above the law.

  3. BAD says:

  4. Storm says:

Businesses collect the GST for GOB — that means Mr. Gegg has collected the money, he just forgot to pay it over to the people (GOB). I presume he and his wife have spent the people’s money to support their grand lives.

It’s like robbing a bank. Now that he has been caught, he wants to return PART of the loot, and call things even. Does that seem just to you?

You or I would be in steel bracelets about now. Why not him? Maybe he just needs some time to arrange asylum somewhere.

  5. Eye in the Sky says:

Gegg is ther new McAfee and he will he harassed and hassled by the GeSTapo until he caves in and losses everything.

Run to Miami and be free.

Get the hell out of Belize. This is a hellhole. Not worth it.
