Is cop on interdiction responsible for man’s death?

Francisco Shol

A police officer is on interdiction following the death of a Punta Gorda man. Fifty-three year old Francisco Shol, a driver for the Punta Gorda Hospital, died on Friday at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital after it was reported that he was beaten on Thursday night, allegedly by a police officer attached to the Special Patrol Unit of the Police Department. That officer, Police Constable Leon Higinio, has since been placed on interdiction following the outcome of the investigation. The Investigating Officer is Dangriga O.C., Superintendent Robert Mariano. He says that Shol’s death was due to severe head injuries as a consequence of blunt trauma to the head.

Supt. Robert Mariano, Investigating Officer

“I have put the file together; I have already typed the file and I am now seeking advice from the D.P.P. as to where to go with the investigation.”

Duane Moody

“Mister Shol died on Friday the fourteenth, what has the post mortem said or confirmed that caused his death?”

Supt. Robert Mariano

Robert Mariano

“At the conclusion of the postmortem, the doctor certified that Mister Shol died from severe head injuries consequent of blunt trauma to the head.”

Duane Moody

“How did this happen?”

Supt. Robert Mariano

“Well basically I cannot go through the facts of the investigation at this time. I can confirm yes that it is a police officer from the Special Patrol Unit and I am sure that the police department will be taking action; it is just a matter of time.  The Commissioner of Police and the Minister of Police had directed that I go down to Punta Gorda and to investigate this matter. That shows that the police department will not condone any misconduct of any police officers.”

Funeral services were held today for Shol. And in respect of two officers in San Pedro who reportedly beat up three residents and held one at gunpoint, word is that WPC Sherifa Young has also been placed on interdiction and that PC Mark Young who was also accused of using excessive force is likely to be interdicted from the force.

If it’s murder, hang the constable the same as any other murderer should be hanged.

Let’s watch what quality of justice and protection exists in Punta Gorda.

There’s a special level in hell for corrupt police.

When you place power in the hands of uneducated people, you create a lethatl weapon. A law enforcement badge to many young men in Belize, is a licence to show power. Many police officers have little education, they lack reasoning skills.
There has to be a better way to screen potential officers. There should be a way to evaluate the control level of future police candidates. I would like to know how the selection process works and what is involved in the training.
