Charges against accused tax thief dismissed

He was accused of jacking more than fourteen thousand dollars from the Income Tax Department, but following proceedings in court today, all charges were dismissed against the defendant. Twenty-four year old David Longsworth was charged with robbery and handling stolen goods following the armed robbery of the tax office in Belize City on July twenty-seventh. But today his attorney, Hubert Elrington successfully argued that Longsworth’s caution statement is not be admitted to evidence on the basis that it was forced out of him by police investigators. As for the accusation of handling stolen goods, Elrington pointed out that since there was no evidence connecting the three thousand dollars found in Longsworth’s possession, that charge should also be dismissed. Chief Magistrate Herbert Lord agreed and told Longsworth that he was free to leave. At the time of his arrest, Longsworth was an employee of the tax department, working in the records room.
