A Belize City man has been returned to the Kolbe Correctional Facility for an extended stay of seven years. Twenty-nine year old Clarence Grant, a resident of Ontario Village in the Cayo District, appeared today before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith, where he was found guilty of robbery and handed his sentence. Grant was accused of robbing B.D.F. Lieutenant Zane Duhaney of three hundred dollars on July thirty-first, 2011. Duhaney claimed that on that day Grant pushed a firearm into his back, shoved him into Pregnant Alley in Belize City and robbed him of his wallet containing three hundred dollars. He was able to get a good look at his assailant, though, and pointed him out in an identification parade held two months after the robbery. In his defense, Grant claimed that he was in police custody in Belmopan on the day of the robbery. And he was, but investigations showed that he was released from custody at two-thirty in the afternoon and the robbery was committed at five, which allowed him enough time to travel from Belmopan to Belize City. Grant was sentenced to seven years for this offense, but he is already an inmate of the prison because of a sentence of six years handed to him in late 2012 for drug trafficking. Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith ruled that the new sentence is to run concurrently with the previous sentence, which means that Grant will spend a total of seven years as an involuntary guest at the facility.

There you go again, this is too lenient. This person is a habitual criminal, he should have to serve one sentence then serve the other. It is time to get tough and put a curb on crime and let these criminals know that if you do the crime you will do the time.
so he’ll be there with no worrying early getting ready to work, enjoying three meals daily plus watching maybe tv a channel of choice while I will work hard, get up early leave my lovely family and pay my tax so he can enjoy all of this what an atrocity to all of us Belizeans for this scum bag to enjoy while we work hard everyday for him to live easily.
Kolbe should be a place where they work hard pay for their on needs so much they can do there for them to survive, but it’s reverse we pay for them and they enjoy no wonder this country if filled with youths like him who rather join the Kolbe club while we work hard.

Never concurrent sentences for violent crimes or crimes committed with firearms. That should be the law.
This criminal just got a free robbery, in essence.

Habitual criminals need to be identified and imprisoned HARSHLY. That approach has had a big effect in reducing serious crime in the States.
They use a “3 strikes” law in many places there, where all serious and dangerous crimes have mandatory prison sentences, the second conviction gets DOUBLE the sentence, and the third conviction results in life imprisonment.
Most good citizens never get a single conviction for a serious crime, so a 3 strikes law would let us get the dangerous people off the streets where they cannot do any more damage.
