D.P.P. orders arrest of cop who killed burglar
It made headlines in September 2005: the police shooting of mental patient Egbert Gordon Junior in Los Lagos. Gordon had broken into the residence and barricaded himself inside. The police say they gave Gordon ample time to surrender and only shot him when he acted aggressively as if armed. But subsequent public outcry criticized the way police handled the incident and tonight, more than a year after the shooting, News Five has confirmed that the Director of Public Prosecutions Kirk Anderson has issued an arrest order for the officer who pulled the trigger, Police Constable Jesus Marroquin. The charge? Murder. But that was on November tenth and Marroquin has yet to be arrested even though the D.P.P.’s directive was copied to the Police Commissioner, the Officer in Charge of Eastern Division and the Officer in Charge of the Crimes Investigation Branch. This afternoon Police Press Officer G. Michael Reid told us the directive will be followed but there is some discussion regarding the charge to be levied.
G. Michael Reid, Police Press Officer
?If the Director of Public Prosecutions issues a directive more than likely that directive will be followed. It is just a matter of going through the procedure. If such a directive was issued I am sure you can look forward to seeing something done pretty soon.?
At the time of the incident the Gordon family maintained that Gordon had become a danger to himself and others. However they strongly believe he was not armed when the police shot him.
