National basketball team in Guatemala; but claim persists in sport

The referendum process has encouraged Belize to be more aware of trends and slights by different organizations in Guatemala that are obligated to promote that country’s propaganda. The latest infraction has been reared in sports. The National Basketball Selection is preparing for the upcoming Central American Games in Costa Rica from March eleventh to the seventeenth. To prepare for the event, the Belize Basketball Association (B.B.A.) has departed for a tournament to be held in Peten, Guatemala this weekend.  A letter was sent from Henry Omar Morales Vargas, the Technical Director for Guatemala’s National basketball federation.  But the logo for Guatemala’s federation also includes a map of Belize infused into Guatemala. However offensive the image may be to Belizeans, the team will play in the tournament against the host country as well as Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and Mexico.

  1. Bear says:

Every piece of Guat government letterhead tells all we need to know — they are obsessed with conquering the Jewel, so we must be super-vigilant, especially with tens of thousands of “nationalized” Guats living among us.

  2. Storm says:

Let’s support our basketballers, and hope that they thoroughly trounce the Guats.

  3. Belizean First says:

I am of the opinion we should boycott these events. Wherever our country is being lorated, we should not be part of ANY OF THOSE EVENTS. WE NEED TO STAND FOR OUR COUNTRY AS A SIGN OF PROTEST! What do you think? It seems to me that we are being seen as complacent or simply not caring and just staying quiet. Behaving just as we do when our own government errs against us. When will we as BELIZEANS STAND for SOMETHING?

  4. Belizean Pride says:

just walk out of the tournament since to me that’s being disrespectful to us the Belizeans, we know our team can squash them but lets take a stand and just walk out.

  5. Nimbo says:

Fully agree we should just boycott the tournament- we should send a strong message to them and the international world that Belize is a sovereign country. Where is our Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sports, Ambassadors, and ultimately the Leader of this country? We are making such a big fuss of Will Mehia who is standing up for the rest of the country and yet, we have this slap in the face and they are silent? This they should bring across to the GUatemalans- Belize is ours not yours!

Mein- they just make us so sick- maybe they done sell us to the Guats already for a couple of quetzales…makes you wonder.

  6. BMNJ says:

This letterhead blatantly displayed how disrespectful Guatemala is to Belize. Will anybody, be it the Prime Minister, the foreign minister, Belize ambassador to Guatemala, or even the leader of the opposition, express to the Guatemalan authorities our dislike and discontent regarding this map?
