Guatemalan president alerted by group ‘erasing’ border

Patriotism is the guiding force of the Belize Territorial Volunteers. The group headed by Wil Maheia of PGTV and the People’s National Party will take busloads of people to carve out a clear and distinct line to demarcate the border between Belize and Guatemala. When the exercise is complete, the volunteers intend to clear an area from Gracias Adios, the Sarstoon River along the Chiquibul and through Caracol.  But whether or not the Guatemalans are using a loose translation of words, Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina has his country on high alert regarding the group. Maheia calls it “Clearing the Border” and the Guatemalan President calls it ‘erasing the border.’ It appears that the Guatemalans view the action as a threat. But News Five spoke via phone to the P.G. native and he indicated that the group’s peaceful initiative will not enter Guatemalan territory.

Voice of: Wil Maheia, Organizer Belize Territorial Volunteers

Wil Maheia

“Well we are very prepared. Safety is number one for us. We have like I say the assistance of military officers who were trained in (Royal Military Academy at) Sandhorse, who are very familiar with GPS positioning systems; we have a surveyor that’s going to be along with us. So there is no way in which we will be inside Guatemalan territory. If the Guatemalans decide to grab some of us, it will be kidnapping and I would that you know that at least from a human rights stand point, that people will react to that as there is no way that we will risk our lives by venturing into Guatemala. The area that we will be going to is container hill, that’s the hill that the container was blown up a few years ago. We are not erasing the border, we have a border and we just want our border to be more visible. We want to bring to the attention of the thousands of Belizeans across this country, the things that are happening at our border, the lost of diversity, the land grabbing that’s taking place by Guatemalans inside Belize’s territory. I had discussion on Sunday with Alcaldes from Jalacte and san Vicente and they both complained about Guatemalans coming into their villages and taking away land from their people without any permit or any permission or any kind of legal status.”

  1. Storm says:

These Volunteers are great patriots, doing the job our cowardly government refuses to do — protecting our nation’s land.

    Let’s all support them!

  2. Bear says:

Of course, the Guat president thinks the border is somewhere near the reef, not on dry land.

  3. Rookie says:

Why would a poodle bother a pitbull? It makes no sence for Belize to provoke or even think about creating a hustile situation with Guatemala!!! Their army is far larger than ours. Why would the Government be coward — they are trying to use reasonable measures to deal with the issue — creating an international incident will not help — what if those volunteers get shot by the guatemalan military for having machettes in their hands — what if they are arrested by guatemalan authorities — who will feel — only their families — and in that case should we go to war with guatemala for them — in would say hell no!!! We have more to loose if we go to war!!!!!! Let the government and the military deal with the border — volunteers should protess in Belmopan not go to the border!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Nimbo says:

And our Imaginary Foreign minister calls it “imaginary border”- go figure.

Go Will and team! We are proud of you- doing what our so called leaders should be doing in the first place- you are true patriots!

  5. Seletar says:

Rookie, better for the poodle to die fighting on its feet than to bow down and lick the Guat pitbull’s feet.

Guatemala has a long and terrible record of abusing its own people, especially the Mayans that it slaughtered by the hundreds of thousands in recent years. It still oppresses them, and the large Mayan population there is a potential time bomb for the Guat generals, if they ever rise up again. We should quietly support Mayan dissident groups inside Guatemala.

If the Guats ever take over the Jewel, our own Mayans will suffer greatly, and even more so our black population, since the Guats are pretty racist in that way.

  6. vicky says:

The prime minister is ready to tell the belizean people anything that comes to his mind, but he does not have the guts to tell the guatemalans anything. ….!

  7. Rookie says:

Understand Seletar —- hence the reason why we should no want to fight with Guatemala — if we do we — the people of this country will suffer — why provoke an incident??? For us all to die!!! Does it make sence for all of us to die fighting Guatemala?? Do you want them to take over the country after we are dead??

Think pple — we need the support of the international communities —- we dont need an international incident that we provoked!!!!

  8. Joe says:

hay the Guatemalan President want to start an international, incident, I say bring it on.

Be ware that the US Drones are in Belize, and they are watching, flying high, but can see all movement.

  9. bzmk says:

These patriots have the right idea and the guts. But it will take much more than what they currently have to get tis accomplish. This is a numbers and resource game. The guats have the numbers and resource in their favor. For something like this to even have a chance of success, they need the support of other central american countries…..That will not happen…..Where are the Americans? Canadians? Chinese, Indians….British?
