Prison guard charged with aiding breakout
An officer at Hattieville Prison has been arrested after he allegedly helped an inmate to escape. Thirty-eight year old Wilfredo Gonzales was fingered by the convict he allegedly helped break-out of the correctional facility on October twenty-seventh. That prisoner, Roberto Garcia, told police after he was recaptured that Gonzales told him that he would let him escape as he had received thirty-nine thousand quetzals–around ten thousand Belize dollars–on his behalf. Garcia further reported that he was instructed to make his move when Gonzales snapped his fingers. Garcia, along with two other inmates, then made a run for it by climbing the exterior perimeter fence. Gonzales, a Guatemalan national, has been charged with Aiding Escape and Wilful Escape. He was granted bail in the sum of five thousand dollars and the matter was adjourned to December eighth.
