Is Belize being soft on Guatemala?
And our question for tonight is: Do you think our government is too soft with Guatemala? Send your comments and responses using your SMART phones to 8686 or post your vote on our e-poll at channel5belize.com. You can also send an email with your comments to questions@channel5belize.com.
My thinking is to sic Minister Saldivar on the Guatemalans as he seems to have a penchant to :school” others.
I do not think Belize is soft when dealing with Guatemala but the governments of Belize both PUP and U.D.P. have failed miserably in educating our citizens about this dispute and we are not as nationalistic as the Guatemalan people. Until we educate our people about this dispute and educate our people to become nationalistic Belizeans, we will be able to be more passionate and assertive about this issue. I see land ownership as the main ingredient to get our people on board and I would give every Belizean citizen a lot to build a home for their families and land to grow food for them so that we can eliminate poverty, unemployment, crime, gangs, starvation and other social ills which currently exist in Belize. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer in Belize.
Especially on our immigration policy. In a few years we will we known as Guatemalizeans.
Wellington, one of the reasons it may seem that we are not as patriotic as the Guats is that so many of our “nationalized citizens” — tens of thousands of them — hold DUAL citizenship in Guatemala. Those people are like a “fifth column” of enemies already inside our border, wishing the Guats would finally conquer or absorb us.
Here’s a serious idea:
LET’S HAVE OUR UNITED NATIONS REPRESENTATIVE INTRODUCE A RESOLUTION THERE, GENERAL ASSEMBLY OR SECURITY COUNCIL [if we can get a sponsor there], TO CONDEMN OR REBUKE GUATEMALA FOR INCLUDING THE JEWEL AS PART OF GUATEMALA ON ITS MAPS.
It may be symbolic, but we are the EQUAL of the Guats in the UN, and we probably have more numerical support from English-speaking members than the Guats have from Spanish-speaking members.
It is the one place where we can lodge a big public protest without fear of a military incident.
AGREE OR DISAGREE?
we should rough up Guatemala’s feather’s quickly.
Damn right we’re too soft toward the Guats!
They insult us, threaten us, and claim half our country as theirs, and all we do is appease them and apologize!
We are playing a losing game, we need to be indignant, and make our case loudly at the UN and anywhere else we have seat!
We also need to start preparing to fight for our freedom before we lose it. I think we should do what the Swiss and Israelis do, require every adult to undergo basic military training, the sooner the better. (Excluding convicts, gang members, and naturalized citizens who might still be loyal to Guatemala — sorry, we have to be realistic, the future of our country is in peril).
Umm where are the Brits to protect Belize? Belizeans would be quick to say that they are independent . If that’s the case, have your own government, take the Queens face off your currency. The reality is that Belize is not free but controlled! I long for the day when Belize is truly an independent nation.
