Two arrested for Daly Street chopping

Story PictureToday, Belize City police escorted to Magistrate’s court the two young men they believe severely chopped twenty-four year old watchman Luis Armando Ibanez, causing him to lose his left hand and two fingers from his right. Construction workers nineteen year old William Burgos and eighteen year old Miguel Chacon appeared before Magistrate Margaret Gabb where they were formally arraigned for the indictable offences of Attempted Murder, Maim, Use of Deadly Means of Harm and Dangerous Harm. The attack, which occurred in front of the Insurance Corporation of Belize building under construction on Daly Street around two on Sunday morning, was a vicious one. Authorities say witnesses report that they saw two Hispanic men chase Ibanez from Queen Street and Ibanez tried desperately to run to the safety of his workplace. It was following an ID parade in which the accused were identified that Chacon and Burgos were charged. Police say that since their arrest both men have remained silent. No motive has yet been established for the crime. Following their appearance in court, Burgos and Chacon were remanded to Hattieville Prison until November seventeenth.
