Minors and teen acted with common purpose to commit murder

Two minors have been charged for a City shooting last Tuesday for which Akeem Augustine has already been arraigned and remanded.  The suspects are believed to be involved in the shooting of a group of minors who were standing at the junction of Police Street and La Croix Boulevard.  The sixteen and seventeen year old suspects appeared before Magistrate Hettie-Mae Stewart this morning and were slapped with four counts of Attempted Murder and four counts of Aggravated Assault as well as Conspiracy to Commit Murder. Because they are minors, the duo was remanded to the Belize Boot Camp until April twenty-second 2013.

Old enough to kill is old enough to hang.

We have an epidemic of gang murders and cartel crimes that reaches down into the ranks of teenagers, and the offenders must be treated like adults when they commit crimes, regardless of their birthday. Our laws are far out of date regarding crimes committed by criminals under age 18.

Let’s change the law so that violent crimes and firearm crimes committed by people 14 and older will be tried and punished as adult crimes.

A good example is Nelson Martinez, who was charged this week for a firearms offense — but he began with murder and attempted murder charges years ago, when he was about 16. Our foolish laws treated him like a misbehaving schoolboy, but he was a stone murderer, and other Belizeans have suffered because of the stupidity of our laws and courts in his case.

Lock up the few who make life dangerous and insecure for the many.
