GSU cops pose as drug consumers to bust peddlers
It is not often we hear of police going undercover in order to catch suspected suppliers of drugs red handed, but on Tuesday, members of the GSU did just that. The officers posed as thugs trying to buy weed in the Mile Eight community of the George Price highway and were able to detain three men. The first to be arraigned before Magistrate Hettie Mae-Stewart was twenty year old Shawn Mckay who was charged for Abetment to the Commission of a Crime, to Wit, the Supplying of Drugs to Another. Allegations are that on Tuesday, McKay facilitated the crime of supplying seventy-nine grams of cannabis to GSU officer, Elmer Nah. McKay had initially pleaded guilty but when asked if he understood the charge, he replied yes, but stated that what is being said by police never occurred and that he pleaded guilty because he had no one to bail him. Magistrate Stewart explained to McKay that it was not a reason to plead guilty and if he wasn’t in agreement with the police facts she could not accept a guilty plea and she then entered a not guilty plea. He was offered a bail of five thousand dollars plus surety of the same amount. Two others were arraigned, a minor and thirty-two year old Angel Dorado for the Possession of a Control Drugs with Intent to Supply seventy-nine grams of cannabis to a police officer and supplying a control drugs. Dorado, and the seventeen year old minor, allegedly supplied ten grams of cannabis to Nah. In court both pleaded not guilty to the offenses and were offered a bail of five thousand dollars. McKay, Dorado and the minor were able to meet bail and are due back in court on May seventh 2013.
Good, creative police work — let’s have more of it.
I hope the police have been provided the basic equipment to win convictions in these cases, like inexpensive recorders or video cameras. How about it, Hon. Saldivar?
They are gonna beat this case if an attorney represents them. The cops ‘created a crime’
first a law must b pass for video or other apps to b admited in court…
this is mockery to our belizean society, to travel 8 miles out of the city to do that when in teh city its plague with places that sell drugs? why dont they try to go and buy weed in george st.
