Islander stabbed on Barrier Reef Drive

There was another violent incident at La Isla Bonita on Thursday night in which a teenager was injured and transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in a serious condition.  Seventeen year old Jason Chan, a construction worker and resident of Ambergris Caye, was stabbed shortly before one-thirty this morning on Barrier Reef Drive. According to San Pedro Police, they visited the Doctor Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic where they found Chan bleeding from two stab wounds to the chest. Police say that Chan was in front of an establishment at the corner of Barrier Reef Drive and Pelican Street when he and his friend, Valerio Zetina, got into an altercation with Alfredo Cowo and his brother, who allegedly inflicted the injuries on Chan. Chan fled the scene, but collapsed on Pescador Drive.  He was picked up by a passerby, rushed to the clinic and later transported to the K.H.M.H. Police are currently looking for the Cowo brothers as part of their investigation.

hi rod…i am from the island…i dare you to tell me of a town or city in belize..in this world…that is crime free..

Oscar, Rod may be guilty of overstating his case, but not by much. If you live on the island, you have seen it spiral down from a place that was pretty safe 10 years ago to a place where it’s risky to be out at night. Lots of bad business there now, and with bad business come bad people and bad problems. I’m embarrassed that I can’t in good faith recommend my friends in the States to vacation there like I used to do, because I would feel responsible if they got robbed or worse. It’s just not a safe place in 2013, and the police there are impotent at best. Just ask poor dead Mr. Faull’s family about that. Or Ras Cobra’s family.

I’d love to see a poll about how other Belizeans feel about crime and safety on Ambergris today.
