O.W. Cultural Fair scheduled for Sunday
Does your mouth salivate at the mention of cochinita pibil and relleno? Can’t help but stomp your feet to the tune of the hog head dance? If so, you’ll definitely want to be in San Jose Nuevo Palmar in Orange Walk this weekend for the third annual Fiesta del Pueblo. The event is organised by the Palmar Maya Preservation Group to celebrate the seventieth anniversary of the relocation of residents from San Jose Viejo in the Cayo District to San Jose Nuevo Palmar. According to Public Relations Officer Arturo Cantun, there will be no shortage of Maya and Mestizo activities at the cultural event.
Arturo Cantun, P.R. Officer, Palmar Maya Preservation Group
?We are inviting you guys to come out and learn about the Maya/Mestizo culture because what you?re gonna learn is stuff that we live in our daily lives. For example, you will learn more about the Mestizo dishes, how they are prepared because we are gonna prepare the Mestizo dishes on the grounds, especially the cochininta pibil, tamales, escabeche, relleno, everything is gonna be prepared on the grounds. We also are gonna have the dances, especially the hog head dance. It?s a very famous dance and it also identifies the Maya/Mestizo culture. Also, we?re gonna have other folkloric dancers participating on Sunday from Chetumal, Xaibe, Cristo Rey, Pachacan, Palmar, Yo Creek, all of those groups are gonna convene in Palmar. So you?re not only learning about stuff in class, you?re gonna actually be learning the dances, you?re gonna see them. You?re also gonna be able to participate in the dances and participate in the preparation of the food as well.?
The Fiesta del Pueblo activities will take place at Maximo Plaza in San Jose Nuevo Palmar, starting at nine on Sunday morning. Attendance is free of charge.
