Coach says its time for proper basketball facilities…

Story PictureBut after Saturday’s motorcade, what’s next for Team Belizean Heritage after the COCABA Championship for men is still up in the air. Yet the possibilities seem endless at this point for our dream team. Even if Belize makes it all the way to the 2012 Olympics, there is a roadmap that the players must follow to achieve success in London. And that includes having practices in a proper training facility. Team coach, Kevin Siroki, appeared on Channel Five’s breakfast show Open Your Eyes this morning with Co-host William Neal and I. Siroki says that he is impressed with the Benito Juarez Poliforum in Cancun, Mexico and thinks it’s high time that the sport gets some respect locally and a real home court to practice on.

“Talking to some people who built the gym, the gymnasium we played in or the full house we play in now was about eight million dollars and they still got change back from eight million dollars. So if they can do it, I think we can do it. I read the news last night and unfortunately, a little disappointment for myself again, they’re supposed to have a groundbreaking at the Marion Jones tomorrow again, with a football field. I love the football players and I love the football team, but again you can see what we’re doing up here and for us to be put on the backburner, I think it’s totally wrong. What these guys have been put through and for us to compete at that level at this high level that we’ve shown that we can compete at, I think that we need to put some money into facilities to get everybody—the guys that come in and the local guys—and get facilities that we can compete at and train at so we don’t get hurt. The gym is terrible, the Civic’s terrible so we need to get something done and hopefully, they take that consideration of what they’re seeing what we can do on a basketball court here and go from there.”
