One hit murder in Libertad

There was a murder up north on Friday. A mechanic was killed reportedly over a bottle of rum and his best friend has been charged. Sisto Victor Osorio was hit on the head and died within minutes in the village of Libertad. Fifty-eight year old Marciano Correa turned himself in to the police and has been charged with Osorio’s murder.  News Five’s Duane Moody spoke to the first person who found Osorio dead.

Forty-three year old Sisto Victor Osorio’s life was cut short just before twelve on Friday when he was attacked from behind with a piece of firewood. Osorio, a mechanic and handyman of the Libertad Village was intoxicated and it is reported that he was hit to the right side of the head as he was leaving the house of fifty-eight year old Marciano Correa.  Desmond Wade was one of the first persons to arrive on scene. He says he saw his friend just minutes before he was killed.

“I saw a body on the ground which at first I didn’t realize that it was one of my best friends, Victor Osorio. So I immediately stopped and I went at him and I touched him and I said Dalla Coin—that dah weh we call he. I said bwai Coin, Coin and no response. So I told the other people who were around that he is already dead. And then immediately called the police. He was bleeding from the back of the head where he got the hit. He was on the side with the head down. And he was a real, real nice person especially in this neighborhood that we are in because he is a mechanic and he is a helpful guy. He was already on the road coming this way towards my house and it was on the road that he got hit; so he wasn’t in the yard of them so he shouldn’t have done that to a very nice and cool person.”

Dalla Coin, as he was affectionately known, was loved by many and the incident is said to have been a result of hard talk over a bottle of liquor. Osorio’s brother, Raul Chi, says he last spoke to him around six on the morning of his untimely death.

“I gone to work and at about five minutes to twelve I get wah phone call that they done kill my brother. So I di try reach the morgue as fast as I could, but I can’t make it. When I reach, police done there and I see my brother; dehn done kill ahn already.”

“They haven’t said why he hit your brother? What led to it?”

“Well I hear about the same rum. Because the man mi want the rum and my bredda neva want give him the rum; sake of that it happen. That’s all I know. For a bottle of lee rum that happen.”

The murder has stunned family and friends because Correa and Osorio were best of friends.

“He knew him very, very well because at times they hang out drinking and hence the reason why I don’t understand why it happened. And it hurt me because he is a very close friend of mine and he doesn’t live at my house, but by daybreak, he is here. On this block where he died I was not expecting that because he help everyone on this block.”

“I start to make wah lee investigation and dehn told me that his same best friend kill ahn. And so I say how this happen? How this happen and this bally used to go to my house to get my brother? My brother mi used to give he to drink, my brother used to give him to eat and thing. Why that had to happen?”

According to Chi, Correa confessed to the crime and turned himself in to Corozal Police and was today arraigned for the murder of his friend. Duane Moody for News Five.

Osorio will be laid to rest on Wednesday in Libertad. The family believes that the lack of a police station in the village is the reason for the increase in criminal activities.
