Football Federation’s telethon and trained coaches

The Football Federation of Belize has been very active in recent times. For the first time, the F.F.B. has a group of Belizeans that are licensed coaches. Eighteen participants from the southern region have been certified after completing the three week course and soon there will be even more licensed coaches. According to Luis Pena, F.F.B.’s Public Relations Officer, the Central Zone which includes Belize City will also be offered the course very soon. But the CONCACAF Goal Cup is dominating the collective minds of F.F.B. Executive because it will require close to half a million dollars to carry the country onto this next leg of the journey to glory.

Luis Pena, Public Relations Officer, F.F.B.

“The Football Federation of Belize will be holding a telethon on the eleventh of May which is next weekend. The telethon will be held at the Princess Hotel. We will have barbecue, we will also be having the telethon which we are doing in order to raise funds for the National Team. One of the things is that the National Team needs a lot of money to travel to the USA to participate in CONCACAF Goal Cup. So the telethon is one way that we have seen that we can raise money. So we are asking all Belizeans to kindly support the National Team as we represent Belize and the F.F.B.”

“Well presently we need, we have a budget of four hundred thousand dollars, which is a lot of money. Apart from that, we also have the budget that we have at the F.F.B. where the players are encamped which is also a part. But starting the first of May, Wednesday, our budget with four hundred thousand dollars comes into effect, which includes stipends amongst other things for the players.”

“How will the calls be coming in for the people who would like to donate?”

Luis Pena

“Okay the call center will be at the Princess Hotel where there will be volunteers manning telephone lines. Apart from that barbecue, we also have shirts on sale, national team shirts and we will also be having a top up day.”

Jose Sanchez

“The games that are coming up, where will they be held? I know we have games scheduled with Guatemala or within Guatemala.”

Luis Pena

“Presently we have a game set with Heredia of Guatemala. Heredia is one of the professional teams that plays in the Guatemalan league. It will be held on the twenty-ninth of May in Melchor de Menchos. The game is scheduled for three-thirty p.m.  Again, we are asking for Belizean support. We won’t make any money because the Guatemalan team is sponsoring everything for us. But we are asking for support. We play as I mentioned the twenty-ninth and we leave back to camp the same night.”

The federation says that the telethon date will be the eighteenth of May and the venue may change. As soon as the details are worked out we will have an update on the telethon and the phone numbers to call.

Hopefully this is the dawn of a new era in Belizean football, with leadership that actually accounts for the money honestly, and puts it into the team and sport, rather than into private pockets.

with so much bad news everywhere else in the country, our athletes have been the one bright spot we’ve enjoyed this year.

Keep it up, and win, lose, or draw, Belizeans are grateful to these footballers.
