Special Envoy for Children provides therapy for surviving Teul sibling
Twenty-two year old Felicia Chen remains under observation for her mental health. On Tuesday, she was charged with three counts of murder for the deliberately drowning three of her children at Belizean Beach last Saturday. In the aftermath of a diagnosis confirming that Chen is suffering from Chronic Clinical Depression, the Special Envoy for Women and Children issued a release on the tragedy. The incident, according to Kim Simplis Barrow, is a stark reminder of the severity of mental health issues. Her office, through the Ministry of Human Development, has provided Chen’s only surviving daughter with a therapist, who will remain by the child’s side as she copes with the death of her siblings.
Kim Simplis Barrow, Special Envoy for Women & Children
“We wanted to wait until there was proper evaluation. I think it was the responsible thing to do. I think that we owe it to the families to be responsible in whatever statement we make and therefore once we knew what it is that she was suffering from we decided to issue the statement. Really for us, for my office it’s very important that we stay on top of these issues, any issues that affect women and children. We, of course, want to make sure that information is out there and that these services are easily accessible. That is very, very important. We have, of course, mobilized our office and we’ve been in touch with the Ministry of Human Development and the Ministry of Health to try to make sure that we bring out ads, PSAs informing the public. I’ve had people contact me through our Facebook profile of the Special Envoy [for Women & Children] saying that they are willing to give testimonials as to how they too have been suffering from depression or have suffered from depression, post-partum depression and different types of depression.”

“What accommodations, if any, will be afforded to the six-year-old surviving daughter of Felicia Chen with regards to helping this child go through this therapy and counseling to cope with what has happened?”
Kim Simplis Barrow
“Well I must say that the Ministry of Human Development has been involved since the day of the incident. They had a counselor with that child and the counselor is still with the child and will be with that child until, I guess, the child is old enough to make certain decisions. But that’s very important, counseling is very important at this point because we want this child to continue school. I gather that she is back to school and that’s a good thing, that’s a good start. She needs to take her time and it’s very important [that the] family, the family support, I think, is key. There are so many things that, I guess, we can still do in terms of ensuring that she gets a proper education.”
It’s a sad tragedy, but its much sadder to know that special envoy and a certain foundation will used this incident to raised million and millions of dollars purportedly to assist people suffering with depression and the people who are actually suffering will not see a penny of the millions that they have raised…out of the many millions they had raised ONE WONDERS HOW THE KIDS SUFFERING WITH CANCER ARE DOING? R they receiving care in the modern pediatric cancer hospital or R they still traveling to Mexico and Guatemala for treatment? Or are they just dying because they don’t have the money to travel abroad for treatment and they cannot access this modern hospital because the fundraisers are using the money raised to live it up LARGE? Some people have no heart, no mind and no conscience!!!! Ms. Lady probably know what it is to suffer from that terrible disease, so she should make sure that every penny raised in the name of assisting people/kids suffering with cancer should go to cancer treatment…Maybe the pediatric cancer hospital had been built and the poor Belizean kids are receiving care in this modern facility and we the people haven’t heard of it, if that is the case I humbly apologized to the Mrs. and the other Gentleman…If not you will hear from me again and then names will be called and a cry to bring some kind of justice for the people will be issued. THANK YOU,
FOR POSTING COMMENTS.
let the lord have mercy on her and god will still bless her for her i will pray and for her other child let the lord jesus christ bless them in god i pray amen
Great questions that deserve answers, @Name Witheld.
From the reports, the entire close family of the 6 year old seems dysfunctional and incompetent, so I hope a better foster family situation can be found for her. She needs the best we can find for her, and continual prayers.
Belize has no psychiatrist available. Special envoy has a plush office on Coney Drive, AC, receptionist, entertainment allowance, travel allowance. all for what, to tell us that the child needs conselling, waste of resources. . Envoy should pay for a full time psychiatrist for each district, with that money.
what is a piece of worthless papers going to help my depression. I don’t want to know what is depression, when it’s mouths that I have to feed! With all due respect Mrs. Barrow, you are too rich and spoiled to understand the situation with poor…
What is a piece of worthless paper going to do to alleviate depression. I don’t want to learn about depression, when I have mouth to feed, and the job is not doing enough!! With all due respect Mrs. Barrow, you are too rich and spoiled to understand the situation of the poor. Our economy is a depression all by it’s self.
