Former BWS employees take court action

Belize Water Services Limited is tonight facing litigation, following a claim of wrongful termination by a group of five former employees that was fired in early February.  Don Gillett, Colin Morrison, Charlette Barnett, Michael Novelo and Journett McKoy were relieved of their respective duties at the company after being informed that their posts had been made redundant.  Barnett is the general secretary of the BWS Workers Union while Gillett is its vice president.  From the onset they argued that the reason for their dismissal was merely a smoke screen since they strongly believe that they were sacked as a result of their alleged participation in disseminating outrageous memos involving the staff and management.  On April thirtieth, senior counsel Antoinette Moore filed a suit on their behalf for loss of salary and benefits.  The group is also seeking compensation for what is considered breach of an existing collective bargaining agreement between the government-owned company and the union.
