Confusion abounds as C.J. grants injunction against B.T.L.
The ruling came down around four this afternoon … and it was not entirely unexpected. Chief Justice Abdulai Conteh has granted an injunction on behalf of Jeffrey Prosser and corporate entities he controls to stop the scheduled annual general meeting of Belize Telecommunications Ltd., due to kick off at six this evening. Since that time we have been unable to confirm the finer legal points of the ruling other than that it logically follows from the C.J.’s previous ruling of ten days ago that the government of Belize acted illegally when it legislated him out of his chairmanship and control of the B.T.L. board. Late word from the Biltmore Plaza Hotel, however, indicates that the board of B.T.L. is going forward with the meeting, at which it is expected to report record revenues, healthy profits and declare a fifty cent per share dividend. If the formal meeting goes forward it would seem to place the B.T.L. board, controlled by Michael Ashcroft, in contempt of the Supreme Court ruling. What happens next is anybody’s guess.
