N.T.U.C.B. turns a green eye; unions against destruction of resources

The National Trade Union Congress of Belize has issued one of its angriest statements. It relates primarily to the malpractices to the use and management of our natural resources and says it is outraged on the scandalous but also tremendously and utterly outrageous continued raping of the Rosewood stock down south, the bulldozing of the Mayan archaeological mound, Noh Mul, and at G.O.B.’s silence in respect of the court ruling on on-shore drilling. The release says that there is a perception that, “certain sectors of the society are above the law or even that the law is silenced to allow abuse of our patrimony.” The N.T.U.C.B. calls on all parties to “cautiously gauge this developing situation and be prepared to come to the defense of this land and its resources.” Rebecca Suazo, the General Secretary of the union says they are keeping a close eye on the mounting scandals.

“The crux of the matter with the release is that the general council has decided that there have been some infractions that we should speak up about concerning the rosewood situation as well as the destruction of the Noh Mul structure up in the north. We felt that as stakeholders, that we should be able to step out and say something so that the public knows that the N.T.U.C.B. is watching and we will not stand for those kinds of destruction of our natural resource.  What we are saying in regards to the on-shore oil drilling and the government land; that the government needs to uphold the law, a ruling was given and we expect that we all as citizens of this country will abide by the law of which we are governed. The public will know as well as our leaders that we expect that they will do the right thing in protecting our natural resources at all times.”

“Well we are always on the watch looking and making sure that we definitely keep everybody on task to make sure that the government and everybody else do what is right for the entire country of Belize.  We are of the view that many times there are things that go wrong in our society that can be done better; to keep watch and ensure that we be the catalyst for change to ensure and keep everybody on point that we are watching and that we expect that whatever their mandate is that they will do that for the good of the entire country irregardless of who it is or who is committing the infractions. That whatever processes that needs to take place to put whoever into line, it should be done and carried out. And the N.T.U.C.B. is here to watch and to act and react if needs be.”

The N.T.U.C.B. says that the “seedlings of corruption within the government must stop.”
