Deputy Prime Minister refuses interview with reporter

Gaspar Vega – he is the very powerful Deputy Prime Minister and a high-level financier of the United Democratic Party. He is also the man whose name has come up time and time again in scandals, controversies and allegations of corruption. And he has also gained notoriety for an interview given to the media in which he claimed that he was not a normal Belizean, and insinuated that his family members deserved special treatment because they worked harder than anybody else. Mike Rudon was in Orange Walk today looking for an explanation for why Imer Hernandez, the nephew of the Deputy Prime Minister, was paid from public coffers for road-works which were never carried out. We tracked down Vega at a restaurant in town where he was hosting a visiting dignitary, and waited two hours to speak to him as he came out, but he wasn’t having it. In fact, he sent out his personal Police bodyguard to tell Rudon that he wouldn’t be granting interviews, and when that didn’t budge the reporter, he finally came out, but he wasn’t allowed to get close to him.

  2. Edwin Torres says:

As a former SB officer, I have followed Mr. Vega since 1993. He is a hard working individual from San Estevan Village(originally). He is not a ‘normal Belizean’ indeed! He is a focused, determined and successful individual. If the second in command refuses to give an interview to Channel 5, so be it. He is hosting a foreign dignitary, and an interview at this point is not happening. Belizeans should follow in his footsteps and work hard like he has, instead of trying to question his integrity because of his financial success.

Mike bwoy i no mean fi laugh but i guess you weh haftu chase down self appointed god. Dpm outta order. He too special fi account to mere mortals in belize. I just hope all them mere mortals remember their own power come election day. Politician see people like toilet paper. At first they realky need the new roll but afta they wipe they behind with it they throw it inna the toilet. This da di philosophy of the udp.

  4. Initiate says:

    Non-normal Belizeans get non-normal treatment.

If you are not normal, you are asking for attention.

Belize wants to know more about non normal Belizeans.

  5. Rasmandeli says:

Typical of Dean Barrow style leadership. They feel they deserve to pillage and loot the richess of this country for their friends and families. !… them

  6. Annie says:

he is Abnormal! what a joke pathetic….. its a bunch of crooks JUST DO YOUR JOB PRIME MINISTER and RETURN THE MONEY YOU GAVE YOUR NEPHEW or he should go to JAIL ALONG WITH THE PRIME MINISTER.

  7. Bear says:

What can you say when you’re the oppressor and enemy of the entire country?

Gapi has neither courage nor shame — hiding behind the curtains he rapes the country every day. We’ve all been hurt by his thefts, and so have future generations, and I think he understands that tens of thousands of Belizeans have turned against him, so now he is afraid of when justice might strike suddenly against him, without warning. Uneasy is the head that wears the crown of corruption.

I think he knows his end is approaching, by what means I don’t know, but he won’t be missed by many Belizeans.

  8. mick says:

To all journalists in Belize: Please continue to get on his case, and any other politician so that sooner than later they will have to cough up some answers or look foolish/stupid eventually!

  9. Jackie says:

@ mick- full agree. Please journalists- bring this to light. The more you are doing your jobs- the more pressure will be placed on them. Don’t worry, the whole world is watching- gone are the days that ministers thoughts only little Belize will be aware of their bad deeds.

I lobby as well that the law be enforced. Ministers and those in charge of public coffers their finances be public knowledge Before holding office, during their interim in office and after leaving office. Whatever shows there that is public information and this can be questioned and appropriate documentation should be made available where all the $$ was derived from.

Let’s see who all will be clean after this. Guatemala is taking a serious step against corruption- although a bit late but who ways Belize should not do so..it is MY MONEY they are taking away

  10. not again says:
