Was Noh Mul destroyed to fill roads in Vega’s area?
The world watched with shock when Noh Mul, the Mayan mound was destroyed by Denny Grijalva’s De Mar’s Construction. In early May, the Orange Walk contractor’s company pulled down sections of the ancient monument with a backhoe to get material to fill roads. Grijalva, a political aspirant in the United Democratic Party, was filling roads at the onset of village council elections. And though it was a stretch, just like the San Antonio Road, the Prime Minister was asked if the Grijalva destruction of the site was in order to fill roads in the constituency of Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega.

And I am satisfied that he would have had no knowledge that material quarried from the Noh Mul site was being used in connection with road infrastructure in his constituency or in the Orange Walk District.”

“I don’t know that he would have been the arranger. I believe the Ministry of Works would have been the arranger. But that he would have had a hand in selecting the areas for infrastructural improvement, I have no doubt. I don’t know the way you frame it… you see clearly, what you are trying to do is to somehow tie him up with the company that carried out the excavation works. It is absolutely remote. If I hire a contractor to build my house and the contractor gets material from Noh Mul, you are going to lay blame at my door; especially if I have no knowledge? That’s not my concern. Look there obviously is a targeted attack with respect to the deputy Prime Minister and hopefully he can deal with that and can handle himself. I don’t want to appear to be jumping at shadows, but when in regards to the Noh Mul incident, there is going to be an effort to work in some kind of culpability—however remote—on the part of the deputy Prime Minister; I must take objection, I must take offence. That is really weird.”
Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega had already sent a press release distancing himself from the destruction of Noh Mul. The fine for the destruction is believed to be in the vicinity of ten thousand dollars. But up until now, no one has been charged.
What is really weird Dean Barrow, is that you with a straight face refuse to hold Vega accountable! You did the same thing with the rosewood scandal, the same thing with the construction of the road in his constituency. No, sorry, I guess it is all of us who are really weird for believing that you would actually give us some satisfaction. The last time I check we paid your salary, that is the least we expect.
PM, forget about “trying to lay blame.”
THERE IS BLAME HERE — ONE OF THE OLDEST MAYAN STRUCTURES IN THE COUNTRY WAS DESTROYED BY A PROMINENT MEMBER OF YOUR PARTY.
Let’s try to see accountability. The existing law forbids destroying ancient sites no matter where they are, and provides 10 years in prison.
MR. PM, WHO ARE YOU GOING TO HOLD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE CRIME WE ALL KNOW WAS COMMITTED AT NOH MUL?
Or have you at last lost all sense of decency?
It is more clear than ABC barrow and all his gang are to blame since he should be statesman enough to let justice be served for the destruction of NOH MUL rather he appears to be working hard not to punish all culprits.Time for arrests and legal action now not maybe .
