Still no charges for Noh Mul

Whylie also commented on the Noh Mul charges…or rather lack of charges, since nobody has been held criminally liable for the destruction of the Mayan mound in northern Belize. Our information is that the investigating officer has been diligently collecting evidence on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Today, the ComPol says that he expects the evidence to be placed in front of the D.P.P. by Friday, and hopefully charges to be laid soon after.

Allen Whylie, Commissioner of Police

“I have directed the regional commander to ensure that the investigator moves vigorously to complete the directives that the D.P.P. had passed to him. And he should be proceeding by Friday at the latest with that case file formally hand over to the Director of Public Prosecution. Once she peruses it and she is satisfied that the investigation has been thorough or has the necessary ingredients to lay a charge, I’m certain that she will so direct our officers and we will comply promptly.”

Mike Rudon

“What has been the difference in this case because I know there have been cases the evidence was there that the mount has been destroyed, Mister Grijalva took responsibility, but there was no arrest? Is this different? All this going to the D.P.P. before charges are laid, has there been consideration made on the fact that Mister Grijalva is a political aspirant and very well connected in Orange Walk?”

“No that has not factored any at all into our investigation. You must understand that it is an investigation that required technical skills. Those skills were given to us through NICH. It is an unusual investigation and you want to be thorough and methodical as possible. Consultations were held, further directives were given to the investigating officer and he is proceeding. You have to understand that investigation is not an overnight process and you go and speak to people and if they want to cooperate, they cooperate. But if they don’t want to cooperate, then you have to find another way to get at the desired objective. I am confident that the officer is doing what he needs to do. I have directed the regional commander to spur him along and hopefully, I am confident that by the end of the week that file will be at the D.P.P.’s Office.”

And while Denny Grijalva readily accepted responsibility via press release and offered to pay the ten thousand dollar fine forthwith.  One legal advisor has said that the ten thousand dollar fine could be applied to every load of material which was carted away from Noh Mul. That’s thirty-five loads, according to Grijalva’s foreman, so you do the math.
