Unemployment rate goes down by two percent
Preliminary results of the April 2013 Labor Force Survey conducted by the Statistical Institute of Belize show that the national unemployment rate has decreased. Compared to 2012, the rate has gone from fourteen point four percent to twelve point one percent. This represents a fall in the number of persons without a job from about twenty-one thousand three hundred and seventy to seventeen thousand nine hundred and twenty persons. At the district level, the unemployment rate varied from eight percent in Toledo to fifteen point five percent in Stann Creek. With the exception of Belize and Stann Creek, which were among the three districts with the highest rates of joblessness, there was a decline in the unemployment rate in all districts. The unemployment rate in Toledo and Cayo, in particular, fell by more than five percentage points, reflecting sizeable employment gains in the agriculture sector. The service sector was the largest contributor to the increase in jobs in the other districts. Women continue to be more affected by unemployment than males. The survey showed that they were three times more likely to be unemployed than men. Numbers for the Belize District were not available as a detailed report will be prepared over the next two months.
Is this supposed to be good news what a joke a quarter of the population of Belize city is out of a job while the pm and his ministers keep on stealing the po people tax money and getting richer and richer while some people can’t feed their picni what a shame and what a shame that this news paper don’t have the nerve and stomach to demand better from the pm of this country.
If there were a two percent increase in employment, then there should be a six percent rise in GDP pursuant to Professor Arthur Okun economic law. But this is not the case as SIB’s statistics are completely manufactured to obtain funding from Central government. The reality is that there is a 33 percent unemployment in the country, and this condition will not be ameliorated unless there is a decrease in Banks’ loanable funds from its current high of 24% to 6%. Why the banks can borrow at 2 to 3 percent, so why must poor Belizeans pay such outrageous rates!! If we have more money pumped into the economy, the economy will be spurred into growth, then employment will rise , the payroll will increase and government will be able to collect more SSB money ( to abuse the Belizean public). We must also decrease taxes and particularly fuel taxes must be eliminated. Nice try by SIB to deceive the public.
