Activist and Facebook friend donates to youth initiative
The academic calendar for 2012 concludes at the end of the month for primary schools across the country. While most students will be on summer vacation, social activist Moses Sulph has wasted no time in planning ahead. Realizing that there is an overwhelming number of needy children enrolled at the primary and secondary levels, Sulph has embarked on his annual campaign to solicit stationeries and other items on their behalf. It is an initiative borne out of the plight of residents in Lake Independence, one that has expanded from three hundred students in its first year to more than six hundred children in need of financial assistance. Answering the call to help those in need is a Good Samaritan whom Sulph met on the social networking site, Facebook. That individual recently made a generous donation towards the cause and Sulph is appealing to the wider public to join-in on the altruism.

“Basically, Hands of Mercy Charity Foundation was founded last year by myself and a couple more members. What had happened is, as social activist, we have on numerous occasion meet people who have social needs…marginalized people. And also as a resident of the Lake I community; I’ve lived here for about nine years, I clearly understand more than most people and see what people go through. So we decided to form this charity due to numerous call for assistance with school supplies and so forth. We visited some of the schools and we got list of names of children who are marginalized, who come to school and don’t have the proper amounts of books and bags and pens and pencils and so forth. We also canvassed the neighborhood and as a well known person, as an activist that meet numerous amount of single mothers and fathers who would like some assistance. So we decided to form this charity to help marginalized kids with school supplies because for children, they are not responsible for the hardship they face. And if we can help a child with school supplies and keeps them in school and we can try and give them a better future. Over last year, we help three hundred and forty-one children with assistance and donation from some very heartfelt community companies such as SMART, ICB contributed a lot of exercise books…SMART donated bags and exercise books. Mister Said he contributed fifty thousand exercise books. So we are trying to continue appealing to these people to continue that effort so that we can continue helping these people. And now the list has gone to six hundred persons who need assistance.”
Interested donors can get in touch with Sulph via his Facebook page. The deadline for contribution, he says, is the end of July to allow for proper inventory and distribution of all items received.
