Minister of Education getting along well with B.N.T.U.

Patrick Faber

Firing back at Minister Faber for his very derogatory comments about teachers and about the unions, the B.N.T.U. has levied accusations that he is out of touch with their concerns since he has had little or no contact with them. Today, Faber strongly refuted those assertions by the union, and told News Five that the B.N.T.U. is lying.

Patrick Faber, Minister of Education

“The union, the management of schools, this ministry of education; we all have very good working relationships. Despite what you see happening in the media, we sit down and we talk and we are on a forward agenda to improve agenda. Some time ago, you may have heard us launch our sector strategy plan for education 2012-2016; it is on our website. That is the master plan of what it is that we are doing. Everybody has a role to play; everybody’s role is clearly outlined; so there is work ongoing. And that is why I am saying when it is that one of the partners—and they look to the ministry of education as the leaders in this instance—we say listen man, you could do a little more in your area. We woulda want yo do it this way. And likewise say to the managements and the parents—the parents being one of the majorly missing stakeholders in our whole equation—you all need to do more. We need to be able to have that kind of honest dialogue with each other without taking things personal and feeling the pinch only on your toe. It is for the improvement of the entire system.  I was amazed to hear them say that I have not had a meeting with them for a year. That might be true that I have not sat down as minister to union officials, but they meet with the chief and the C.E.O. of my ministry very regularly. Everybody knows that I am a part of the prime minister’s cabinet subcommittee to deal with the collective bargaining agreement of which the B.N.T.U. sits with all of their officials in those meetings. And I have sat and there are countless numbers of opportunities where we have gone and we’ve had chance to dialogue. So to say like it is almost like they didn’t have any contact with the ministry or the minister over a year is just not true.”

The Minister of Education also said that joint efforts between all partners are required for the educational system to be successful.
