N.T.U.C.B.: P.U.P. trying to derail D.F.C. inquiry
Following a press release earlier this week by the People’s United Party calling for the resignation of David Price from the D.F.C.’s Commission of Inquiry, tonight Belize?s labour movement has responded with a release of their own. The N.T.U.C.B. says it “expresses deep disappointment and disgust at the P.U.P. release … which attempts to politicize and derail this process”. According to N.T.U.C.B.’s General Secretary Dylan Reneau, the release is just one outcome of an emergency meeting called by the unions on Thursday night.

?To hear this claim that he is being biased, we totally refute that and condemn it because it is in a sense trying to put this whole issue into the political arena. This is not a political issue. This is an issue to investigate the malfeasance or wrongdoing in the Development Finance Corporation. Although it may have some implication on certain political figures within our society.?

?Mr. Reneau, the P.U.P .has said if Mr. Price does not willingly step down they will take him to court. Will the N.T.U.C.B. have you planned for that course of action following that response??

?Well last night at the meeting we discussed all of those possibilities. The N.T.U.C.B. is going to look at?if it goes to that point we are going to challenge it also. That was consensus out of the meeting last night. We are also going to rally our troops, because we think that if we put public pressure on the government in this particular situation that they will allow the commission to continue. Because in 2003, when this government took over the Prime Minister said that he was going to stamp out corruption, and it is obvious that some of the things that happened at the Development Finance Corporation can be branded as corruption. I firmly believe that if our Prime Minister wants to save face and wants to ensure that there?s accountability and transparency he will allow this commission to continue. Let the Belizean people know the truth, because all the debt restructuring activities that he is now having to embark on are somewhat a direct result of what transpired at the Development Finance Corporation.?
