Jaguars, Woodrow and Gaynair, honored locally

The Belize Jaguars did not advance to the other round of the Gold Cup, but they made a positive impact on the CONCACAF games. Team members, Woodrow West blocked many goal attempts in the three games played with the United States, Costa Rica and Cuba while Ian Gaynair scored the only game for Belize. The two have also gained international recognition from CONCACAF for turning down thousands of Euros from a match mixer who wanted to throw the game against the U.S. in Portland, Oregon. Match mixing is a huge problem so as a gesture of respect CONCACAF is honoring Gaynair and West to view the final games this Sunday in Chicago and will be honored at the President Rafael Tinoco’s Banquet. While the government has not thrown laurels at the team, the integrity of West and Gaynair has not gone unnoticed locally. The Belize Olympic Committee announced this afternoon that it is awarding the duo with the Gilmore Kenkson Fair Play Trophy since (QUOTE) “their character exemplifies the aims and objectives of the International Olympic committee.” (Unquote) The trophy will be presented on August at by the Governor General Colville Young who is also a patron of the Committee.
