Meeting To Be Held Friday By Mexican Officials To Discuss Belize City Center Project
And one area of discussion which will be of particular interest to Belizeans is the Belize City Center. That sporting facility was declared unsafe for public gatherings in August 2010. Since then it has been abandoned, basically left to rot where it stands. It seems that almost from that moment there have been reports that the Mexican government will finance a new, modern sporting complex, or even refurbish the old one. But that never materialized. Mexican Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vanessa Rubio, however, says that as early as this Friday, there will be a meeting held on the matter, after which the head of Mexico’s cooperation agency will be coming to Belize to move things forward.

“Mexico is willing to fund the reconstruction of the building, but we also know that there have also been some talkswith regional financial institutions that can be part of the project. So what we would look into is who is going to develop what, with what terms, and get our hands in because we want to have that Civic Center working before the 2015 basketball games. That should be the deadline for that to be up and running and Mexico is willing to finance the reconstruction either by ourselves. We need to look into the project, or together with a regional financial institution such as CABEI.”
According to Vice-Minister Rubio, the discussions also touched on the cost of electricity provided to Belize from Mexico. She says that they have indicated that they are willing to look at it, but the bottom line is that they will not be able to provide electricity to Belize at a cheaper cost than it is provided to Mexicans.
I applaud the various monetary contributions Mexico has given to our country. From building the new border, which by the way should have been done by Belize and never was able to start. to assisting Belize in other bi lateral agreements. While the Mexicans are always willing to render assistance, Belize must stop this “gimme Fu free syndrome”. Everything Belize expects for free, this non sensical dependency disease. The political leaders have encourage this practice for everything they do. The country can only progress if the people desire better for themselves. Therefore, while the Mexicans help is very much greatly appreciated, Government should step up and stop beg.
The thing is, I know they will give us this brand new complex. But the hustling will be cut out and the money hungry vultures will once again stop this from happening cause they won’t be able to hustle the Mexicans.
If I can’t have, nobody will have.
