10 year old boy caught driving delivery truck with drunken adult passenger

Belize City police are tonight investigating a report that a minor, a ten-year-old boy, was caught driving a delivery truck in the area of Belama Phase Four on Tuesday.  According to an eyewitness, the child was seen commandeering the vehicle along the street immediately behind the Benny’s apartments with a visibly intoxicated adult slumped in the passenger seat.  When they tried to intervene the child reportedly ran away. The witness told News Five that there were several other passengers onboard.

“The police said that they will exercise due process and they will, they will investigate the matter and they will look into it and whatever the situation that arose out of it was and they will deal with that situation.  I don’t want to really rehash that because I’m giving them a chance, I’m not trying to be hasty and I’m giving them a chance to sort of iron that out and see where that goes.  What I saw when I approached the situation was my niece’s boyfriend holding this man who was intoxicated.  He held his hand because the man had the key in his hand and he was trying to stop him from starting the vehicle and the truck that they were in, the delivery truck, you know, trying to stop them from moving off.  So that was what I saw and there were children in the back.  By the time I arrived on the scene, when I came out of the house, the child who was driving the vehicle had already ran up the street.”

The matter is currently being looked into by police attached to the Belama substation.
