Third suspect charged in shooting at police vehicle

Today a third person has been arrested and charged in connection with the attempted murder of Superintendent Edward Broaster. Twenty-four year old Kareem Cattouse appeared before Magistrate Margaret Gabb where he was arraigned for the indictable offence. Cattouse was also charged for aggravated assault and damage to property.

Police say on the night of May twenty-first around eight thirty, Superintendent Broaster was driving a police car when he saw a maroon Toyota car run a stop sign on Albert Hoy Street in the Belama area. Broaster decided to pull the car over and used the police siren and horn to grab the driver’s attention. The driver, however sped, off towards the seaside into Buttonwood Bay.

It is at this time police say a man seated in the rear of the fleeing vehicle pointed an object towards the advancing police car and fired a shot. The bullet shattered the car’s back glass and then hit the cop’s windshield.

As the police followed in hot pursuit another man travelling in the Toyota’s front passenger seat opened the door and fired three shots at the police car. It was at this point Broaster was assisted in the chase by personnel from the Anti Drug Unit.

Police report as they continued to follow the Toyota onto Cleghorn Street another man jumped out of the vehicle and threw away a twelve gauge pump action shotgun. Police later recovered the weapon and the car which was left abandoned on New Road.

Cattouse was remanded into custody and is scheduled to reappear in court on August seventh. He joins two other men, thirty-two year old Jerome Goff and seventeen year old Lincoln Sinclair whom police believe were also involved.

Authorities say they are looking for a fourth person in connection with the incident.
