B.T.L. avoids elimination in basketball play-offs
Good evening I?m James Adderley and we welcome you to this serving of Sports Monday. The Father?s Day Cycle Classic was a monster which rolled for eighty-two miles from the Benque Viejo border station to finish on Coney Drive, here in Belize City.
We go directly to the sprint for the w and left of your screen, it?s seventeen year old Herman Ochaeta pulling the trigger. Douglas Barcelona Lamb, a worthy veteran riding for Team Santino?s answers the challenge in this head on clash.
The veteran finds the punch and surges forward to take the title. He was clocked at 4 hours, 2 minutes and 3 seconds, forcing the young upstart, Herman Ochaeta from Team Western Spirit of Cayo into second place. Now here?s the fight for third, Quinton ?the Baddest? Hamilton of Comfort Air steps it up to a higher gear and grabs this finish, as Jose Choto riding for Sea Way and Mateo Cruz of Santino?s rounds out the top five. And we certainly say Congratulations.

?I told the kid that he is one hell of a rider. Even though they had a long time of free ride, he still rode real strong. I almost didn?t get on to his wheel when he took off by the bridge. I dug into it and I was getting cramps all over, but I made sure I got on to his wheel. Then when I got on to his wheel I said, my team always puts me in this position. I work hard and end up coming in for the win.?

?But in the end the challenge wasn?t as big as it looked because you got off his back wheel and easily overtook him to take the win.?

?Yes, because he did all the work and he was just driving it hard. Nothing else but hard and I just had to do the right thing. I waited and I waited and I hoped that he just didn?t go slow because once he stopped pedalling and freed up I would have developed a lot of cramps. He did the right thing for me; he did like a lead out and I just ended coming around at the last moment.?

?They were a lot of attacks coming into the city. And when I saw the last one, I noticed that the riders were not paying attention to anyone so I just decided to go. I opened up a gap pretty quick. I saw Douglas on my wheel and I just continued driving it until the end.?

?But how you felt with Douglas on your wheel not doing any of the work? Didn?t you try to get him or yourself to change the equation around??

?I just asked Douglas one time if he was ready to help me and he said no, so I just continued driving. I know no is no, so I just continued to give it my all until the end. I know I couldn?t get Douglas to come around me to lead me out so I knew I had to do it on my own. And I just gave it everything I had and he managed to take the win.?
Turning to other cycling news, the female part of the Pharmacy Day Classic saw Marinet Flowers win the thirty-nice mile ride in 2 hours, 15 minutes and 15 seconds. With a powerful spirit to edge out Gina Lovell, Alicia Thompson takes third. Gabrielle Lovell fourth and Fiona Humes Gonzalez finished fifth.
On the male side, the thirty-nine miles on the Boom Circuit had an unexpected and unwanted ending when these two front runners Jeffery Zelaya and Marlon Castillo, became entangled in a crash on the final lap inside the Marion Jones Sporting Complex. Zelaya picks up his bicycle and walks with it for first place, followed by Marlon Castillo who obviously suffered the worst in this particular event. He, nevertheless, gets second place. This injury would keep Marlon Castillo out of Sunday?s Father?s Day Cycle Classic. In the meantime, Giovanni Leslie took second place; the American veteran Frank MacCanon finishes fourth and Ernst Meighan rounds out the top five. And we certainly wish Marlon Castillo a quick recovery.
In Billiards news, the Mike?s Club Joseph and Taylor Carom Tournament has reached the semi-final round, which is set for this Wednesday six thirty p.m. at Mike?s Club. In game one, Andrew ?Papa? Brown takes on Manuel Ramos, and in game two Larry Lisbey sees action against Alex ?Camel? Haylock.
Turning to the basketball scene, we?re off to the City Centre where Friday night B.T.L. in the role of host, needed a win to stay alive in this three game semi-final series in semi-pro basketball play with the San Pedro Tiger Sharks.
It?s Paul Sweasey getting the Nets off with this–lay off the glass–for two of his ten points.
Markus Watkins then launches this tre. He would sink five three pointers in a row. He will finish with all of twenty-seven points.
But the Sharks come right back. Keith Acosta gets the good position and gets the bucket.
And then ?Superman? Keith Acosta fills the lane for two more points. He would lead all players with a wicked thirty-five points.
Nevertheless, out the first quarter B.T.L. is up 24 to 22. The Nets go on a big run in the second quarter. A.C. Augustine works the paint for two. He would finish with thirteen points.
Markus Watkins dials long distance for the three, and at the half the Nets are up 55 to 35.
However, the Sharks led by Keith Acosta come back hard in the fourth quarter as he gets the bucket and the foul.
When Corlisle Barrow misses the lay-up, Keith Acosta finishes the play with emphasis we must say.
A minute and a quarter to go in regulation San Pedro trails by three points. Ian A.C. Augustine comes up with the big bucket for the B.T.L. Nets right here. The Sharks then leaves Augustine unattended in the paint; it?s an easy conversion.
The B.T.L. Nets stay alive with a 92-87 big w. The decisive game three now comes up on Saturday out at San Pedro with the University of Belize, already qualified, waiting in the wind. Hey folks we look forward to that particular finish.
