Cannon Leroy Flowers says ministry should not investigate itself in passport scandal

The illegal issuance of nationality and citizenship has struck a chord across all sectors of society. The private sector, unions, and others have expressed outright indignation at the irregularities at the Immigration Department through which persons of dubious distinction have been able to acquire Belizean birthright even when they have never set foot in the jewel. The outspoken Cannon Leroy Flowers gave his own perspective on our morning show as a citizen and as a church leader. The Cannon echoed that it is not for the Ministry to investigate itself and that ultimately, someone must be held responsible for the wrongdoing.

“You cannot investigate yourself that is impossible. With all the good intention, that cannot give all the support and more importantly to move this process forward. So nobody is really held accountable and what saddens me as a citizen is when a young man and I use this example in my church. A young man u think twenty-eight or twenty-nine after he was accused of stealing and he stole a crate of empties and he was given five years or something like that and for God’s sake you are telling me passport whether right or wrong, even if it is one passport is going through he door and nobody is held accountable at all. So what is going to happen in my estimation, until we are able to hold somebody accountable, somebody in a position of authority, we will continue this game and so this is now the fourth administration where again the passport/visa problem stares us smack in the face. When you look at the slew of challenges that the government faces on any given day, what saddens me as a citizen not whether these people are right or wrong but it is that nobody is held accountable under the law in order to say well you know John you are being accused of a crime, you are arrested, you are tried. Because if you go to court and you are freed, I have no problem with that because the process has taken its place. But you cannot circumvent the process and expect that I will be satisfied.”
