Who created the fictional med school in Belize?
There is more coming out about the fictional university that was advertised on the internet to be situated at the Warrie Head Lodge in Teakettle Village. It’s name: University of Central America, School of Medicine in Belize. While there is clearly no hospital, school facilities or the faculty of over one hundred and fifty, the only factual information on the webpage was that it was Doctor Baker Niazi, a U.S. based physician who once contacted John Searle, a local businessman, to use his lodge for a school. As we reported on Tuesday, Searle, it turns out, had no knowledge that he and his son-in-law were listed as members of the Board of Directors of the phantom institution. But who is the infamous Doctor Niazi? Our News Five geek squad scoured the internet today to find traces of Niazi. What they’ve gathered is that Niazi is a Pakistani medical professional who lives in Brownsville Texas. He has developed a reputation as an honest entrepreneur. Niazi is the President of Physicians Work Company in Brownsville and also the spokesperson for the US Pakistani Association in Brownsville. A far cry from the reputation he is getting in Belize, Niazi also convinced a bank to sponsor the Pakistani Day celebrations which were held today. Fifty-three families, all members of the US Pakistani Association of the Rio Grande Valley, joined Niazi in that celebration. Another internet account refers to him as an active community member. But the most interesting account of Niazi was embedded in a small article inside a 2007 Brownsville newspaper in which he was given accolades for his work in Belize. The USA Small Business Administration presented Niazi with the “Best Minority Business of the Year 2007”. And “He is also the founder and chairman of the University of Central America, School of Medicine in Belize”. So it appears that from at least as far back as August 2007, Niazi has been telling the world about his fictional university in Belize. Our geek squad decided to probe a bit further. They went to http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/ucamed.com to find out who is responsible for the content that was selling the med school lie. Both registrant contact and administrative contact are listed as…Can you guess who? Baker Niazi. The website was functioning from the fourteenth of April, 2006. That’s three years that Niazi has been peddling the school. News Five can’t say for sure if Niazi will truly come to the jewel to explain himself next week. In case you can’t wait, network solutions lists his email address as bakerniazi@hotmail.com.
