Christian Workers Union officially expelled from the N.T.U.C.B.

The Christian Workers Union, following a meeting of the National Trade Union Congress of Belize on Monday, has been expelled from the umbrella organization.  The dismissal was formalized as a result of poor attendance of a congress which was held on Saturday.  That unauthorized meeting saw a turnout of ninety-nine members, mostly stevedores, who were present to elect a new executive body.  In the days leading up to the congress the N.T.U.C.B. had threatened that failure to convene the assembly would result in the immediate expulsion of the union.  Despite the anemic show of support, an election could not be held since two-thirds of the union membership was needed to proceed with the exercise.  A majority of the union’s membership in a previous meeting collectively agreed to hold the congress in February 2014.
