Double tragedy for a San Ignacio family following traffic accident
A double tragedy has hit a family from San Ignacio following a traffic accident that occurred earlier this month. On the night of October seventeenth, forty-one year old Ricardo Tepaz was travelling in his Toyota pickup along with his three kids: seventeen year old Dennis, fourteen year old Glendy and thirteen year old Elmer. He lost control of the vehicle and slammed head on into a parked container in San Ignacio. While all passengers received various degrees of injuries, Glendy was critically injured to the head and body and bled internally. She was rushed to the Western Regional Hospital and then on to the K.H.M.H. where she underwent several surgeries. But on Sunday morning around ten o’clock, Glendy succumbed to her injuries. With the news of her demise, Ricardo reportedly ingested a pesticide and died within hours of his daughter. News Five spoke with Inspector Reymundo Reyes of the San Ignacio Police Formation about the unfortunate incident.
Insp. Reymundo Reyes, Deputy O.C., San Ignacio Police Formation
“On the seventeenth of October 2013, at about seven-thirty p.m., San Ignacio Police received information of a traffic accident at the junction of Joseph Andrews Drive and Branch Mouth in San Ignacio. Police visited the scene and on arrival they saw a grey Toyota pickup that had crashed into a container that is parked in one of the yards at that junction. Inside the vehicle was a driver, Mister Ricardo Tepaz, forty-one years old and three of his kids. All persons were transported to the hospital. Because of the condition of one of his kids, Glendy Tepaz, fourteen years old, she was immediately rushed to the Western Regional Hospital for medical treatment and later to the K.H.M.H. She underwent several surgeries and as a result she succumbed to her injuries on Sunday sometime around ten p.m. Information that we gathered after that is that after her father found out that she died, it appears that the father consumed herbicide and he was hospitalized at the K.H.M.H., but succumbed to the pesticide that he had consumed and died sometime around three p.m. that same Sunday.”

“I know he was served with a notice of intended prosecution. Could you tell us what it is believed led to the accident?”
Insp. Reymundo Reyes
“So far what we could see is that he lost control of the vehicle and it appears that he was somewhat under the influence of alcohol when the incident transpired.”

“Apart from Glendy, I know he had two of his other kids with him. Did they suffer any injuries? Are they out of danger?”
Insp. Reymundo Reyes
“The two other persons were treated here at the San Ignacio Hospital. One was immediately discharged with minor injuries, head injuries, and the other person was discharged at the Belmopan Hospital after receiving medical treatment.”
