Lloyd Elijio sentenced to 12 years for attempted murder

Lloyd Elijio

Twenty-two year old Lloyd Elijio has been sentenced to more than a decade behind bars for the October 2009 attempted murder of Mark Lord. Lord was shot on Hyde’s Lane but survived the incident and testified at trial. Elijio was found guilty last week, and this morning, Justice Troadio Gonzalez was prepared to listen to the mitigation plea, but Elijio had no character witnesses to call. He did, however, speak on his own behalf, asking the court for mercy saying that he has a four year old daughter and a child on the way and that he was the bread winner of his family. He said he was sorry and asked the court for leniency.  After considering his mitigation plea, Justice Gonzalez observed that based on his previous convictions, there was a pattern that Elijio was prone to give trouble, there was a prevalence of crime and that Elijio had stalked the victim and shot him with the intention to kill.  After addressing those issues, Justice Gonzalez then sentenced Elijio to twelve years in prison, effective October 28, 2013, when a jury of his own peers found him guilty of attempted murder.  In the trial, Lord testified that Eligio, who he saw and knew very well, followed him to Swing Bridge on October twenty-fifth 2009, all the way to Hydes Lane, where he opened fire on him in front of the DHL building. One of the bullets struck him in the left side of the chest, and he had to be rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment, where his life was saved. The jury deliberated for three hours before announcing their guilty decision.
