Two men electrocuted while hunting scrap metal
B.E.L. has issued warning after warning but some folks just don’t seem to get the message. And that communication failure has resulted in two more deaths by accidental electrocution. The latest to lose their lives are thirty year old Raul Copo and twenty-three year old Filiberto Rash, both of Chan Chen Village in the Corozal District. According to police, on Friday evening the pair cut through a chain link fence surrounding a B.E.L. substation near mile seventy-eight on the Northern Highway, with the apparent intention of collecting copper wire to be sold on the scrap market. Either the wire or the men came too close to the high voltage area of the compound and they were hit with a fatal dose of electricity. Once again police and B.E.L. officials are urging all Belizeans to exercise extreme caution when operating in the vicinity of electric wires or installations. Recently a San Pedro construction worker was killed and a Toledo man severely injured following accidental contact with electricity.
