The Nineteenth Annual CXC National Awards Ceremony is still a few weeks away but the top achievers in this year’s examinations are already celebrating their individual accomplishments. Leading the way is SJCJC alum Aaron Stock, who was the CSEC best performer in 2011, and who now has topped the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations. Stock will be honored as the Most Outstanding Candidate for the 2013 later this month even though he is overseas studying. Stock obtained eight Grade Ones in various subjects, including Applied Math, Caribbean Studies, Chemistry and Physics, among others. In recognition of this achievement Stock will be awarded the Belize Scholarship for 2013. Meanwhile, twenty-year-old Xiaowen Huang, a past student of E.P. Yorke High School, placed first in this year’s CXC exams with a total of sixteen Grade Ones at the General Proficiency Level. Huang, who now attends St. John’s College Junior College, is the most Outstanding Candidate. This afternoon, News Five caught up with Huang who told us that she is elated to have excelled in the CXCs.
Xiaowen Huang, Most Outstanding Candidate, CXC 2013
“I feel very proud of it. I want to thank my school and my parents and my friends who helped me with those subjects. And I think I put enough effort on this so every subject paid off days before.”
Isani Cayetano
“What was it like all those hours of investing time and effort into your studies? What was the preparation for the CXCs like?”
Xiaowen Huang
“The preparation…I started to prepare for those CXCs since third form. I really didn’t spend a lot of time on…I still spend my leisure time on something else. But when I am studying those subjects, I’m really focused on it. And I have extra classes with the teachers who help me with that. and I have interest on those subjects so I didn’t feel tired or frustrated.”
Isani Cayetano
“What are you studying in sixth form now?”
Xiaowen Huang
“Biology and chemistry.”
Isani Cayetano
“So as a bio-chem student, you will be taking A-levels pretty soon, I guess something next year. Are you looking forward to performing this good or this well a second time around?”
Xiaowen Huang
“Yes I am hoping to before good as well.”
Isani Cayetano
“Now what would be your message to other students who are in fourth form at the moment who are gearing up for CXCs in the next semester?”
Xiaowen Huang
“I want to tell them don’t frustrate yourselves on the exams. It is just a test to test how well you learned in classroom. Just focus in class and ask the teacher to help if you don’t understand.”
