Senator Shoman says President does not have a casting vote

Lisa Shoman

Senator for the Opposition, Lisa Shoman explains.

Lisa Shoman, P.U.P. Senator

“Six senators voted in favor—the three social partner senators and the three senators from the opposition—and all six senators for the government voted against. In this matter, the constitution is clear: the president does not have a casting vote. When it comes to any matter relating to section sixty-one (A) (D), which is exactly what we were dealing with today.”

“But then the president didn’t recognize that although you put that him, so it will be recorded that your motion was defeated; not that it was deadlock.”

Lisa Shoman

“It had better be recorded that it was deadlocked because if the Hansard reflects that there are seven votes, I am prepared to go to court to clear the Hansard because the president does not have a vote when it comes to matters dealing with section sixty-one (A) (D) of the constitution. Sixty-one (A) (D) is precisely the section here to investigation wrongdoing and to investigate those allegations. That touches and concerns specifically the senate’s power to investigate wrongdoing and corruption. And when it comes to that, the president who is not a senator and this one isn’t does not have a vote. And the constitution trumps whatever it is that anybody things they are going to find in the standing orders or otherwise. It is the supreme law of the land.”

Reporter

“But still your motion, though valiant, did not succeed.”

Lisa Shoman

“Unfortunately Jules that is so. And I will tell you, I am massively disappointed that the minister of immigration should have voted no in this after all his brave words about his not fearing the light and that anybody could come. Clearly anybody could come except the senate, except his own colleagues with whom he sits every senate meeting. Those are the people he doesn’t want investigating; those are the people he doesn’t want to hold a public inquiry and the public has every right to ask the minister of immigration why did he vote no. he was invited by senator Montejo to in fact recuse himself because it is his ministry that we are dealing with. And you saw that he took the privilege of being a minister to make a public statement, to make a public statement today which nobody could answer, which nobody could respond to, to give all kinds of information for the first time to the media, to the Belizean public that nobody had heard before. All this narrative, all this thing about not being afraid, all the red-herring of the auditor general and the auditor general’s powers, he still could not answer the plain fact that the senate is not the cart of the auditor general’s horse. And that is a fact.”

We’ll have full coverage of today’s senate proceedings in Thursday newscast.

  1. Beano exit plan says:

if things get out UDP control, go to plan B.

    1) start war with Guatemala (a great distraction used by many countries to rally citizens)
    2) loose badly, but quickly, with few deaths.
    3) negotiate surrender
    4) get full amnesty as part of the merger with Guatemala.
    5) become governor of Belice
    6) raises for all former ministers, and a better Guatemala pension plan.

Sorry Lisa, your not part of step 6.

  2. Rod says:

Because hulse is a big thief also all the thieves are sticking together but they should all be locked up the good citizens of this country have the right to arrest all the people involved in this corruption .

  3. Citizen says:

Hulsie was corrupt from the start like all the UDP ministers who promised us good governance. He should not have been allowed to vote and neither the president of the senate. We need civil disobedience in our country before we all go to hell under this most embarrassing bunch of criminal minded people.

  4. Buju says:

    This is typical PUP style…

Why does it not surprise me that it is the same failed politician Lisa Shoman who is making all the noise?
Because she is an educated fool – the same person who said definitely not to people who want to run with dual nationality then turned rite around and offered to defend Schakron.

The same person who as Social Security Chairman went before the court of law after the court found Mr. Courtenay liable in the tune of 3.34 million dollars and stated that Social Security Board is no longer interested in collecting the said moneys!

That same Lisa Shoman – i no think nobody tek she serious other than the pup fanatics that follow her

  5. Educated Dunce says:

Bloody Hell Mate!! Corruption at the HIGHEST echelons of our Country……….How in the world does government expect us not to believe one HUGE coverup is underway when the Lady specifically spelled out the Rules of the Senate to its President……..YOU CANNOT VOTE SIRE.

  6. Rod says:

  7. Concern says:

I don’t know how much of the money Buj is getting, but this is not PUP in power for the last 6 and a half years. This is the massive corruption of the UDP ministers that have been raking the country dry of its money, and they not hiding the money behind doors, or under the bed. They are stealing the money in front of our faces, and who suffers, the poor people of this country. The whole hierarchy is in one massive cover up, and their love of country have been thrown out of the door. This is the biggest hustle this country have ever seen, and thank you Lisa Shoman for showing how far the corruption have spread, because when people do not want an open investigation, its because too many are involved in this money skam! Buj we the people of Belize are suffering so take your head out of the sand and see what is happening around you to the justice system of this country. Too many people are getting poorer by the day, while these thieving ministers live like kings!
