James Adderley and the weekend sporting activities

Good Evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

For a 2nd week in a row, the seasonal rains has played havoc with the sporting scene across the nation. Over the weekend, the Belikin Cup Tournament found it impossible to stage even 1 of the 3 matches advertized adding to the scheduling woes inside this football competition. The week 5 schedule from 2 weeks ago has not been staged as yet but the PLB has informed us that these 3 matches will now be played on the weekend of Nov. 30th. In the meantime, no date has been set as yet for week 7 ballgames washed out over the weekend and as soon as we get that information, we’ll pass it on.

Also falling victim to the weather conditions is the rubber match in the 3 game series for the BDBA Firms Basketball finals. The Association is hopeful that this game will be concluded on Thursday or Friday at Bird’s Isle so stay tuned. Nevertheless folks, we did catch up with the finals of the national secondary schools volleyball tournament staged at SJC Gym on Saturday as St. Catherine Academy faced off against Stann Creek Ecumenical College for the 2013 Female Title. After falling 25-10 in the 1st set, the Dangriga team makes a stand in 2nd. SCA’s power puncher, Leandra Betson goes for the kill, but misses the target to give Ecumenical the point for an 18-14 score and yes we like the on court celebration. Again it’s Betson on the prowl and tries to sneak one in only to see Cance Bowman get the point for Stann Creek. It’s a tie ballgame at 18 apiece when Mya Musa fails to produce the kill on this move. We’re tied at 19 when Leandra Betson does not clear the net with this attempt and yes we’ve got a ballgame.

However, SCA tightened their game as Xiomara Quan sets up Sherilyn Burton who smashes into the teeth of the Ecumenical defense. Burton then gets the better of Avery Sanchez on for this point. And it’s a 25-20 W for SCA when Quan gets to Betson who delivers the final blow for the game to win. Meanwhile folks, the 3rd set was all SCA. Bowman sets up Sarahlee Jones who can’t get the ball over the net. In fact, this perfect placement by Tricelyn Choc is the last point Ecumenical High would come up with in set 3. And it’s Gianna Brown who drives the nail in the coffin as SCA wins 25-4, sweeping Ecumenical High in 3 sets to take the 2013 female title.

Turning to the male championship…San Pedro High School out of the starting blocks as Damian Pollard’s placement forces Denivar Chan of Mopan Technical to use his feet which gives the point to San Pedro. Paul Jovi Ico then sets for pollard who smashes his way past the Mopan Defense. And yes, Damian Pollard is the big bomber for San Pedro as he demonstrates with this vicious kill. Edward Nunez is also a bad man. Ico sets him up and he delivers with much power. San Pedro takes the 1st set 25-15. In the 2nd, again it’s a fast start for San Pedro as Pollard smashes again. This time though, Mopan Tech hangs tough—Justin Aguirre sets up, Denivar Chan steps up like a giant to earn a much needed point. Luis Chan then comes up with this perfect placement and hello people…we’ve got a ballgame. We’re tied at 24 points apiece when Denivar Chan finds the perfect spot to place this ball. When Afrie Kyle Black fails to put this ball over the net, Mopan Tech takes a 25-24 lead. And then Black trying to compensate misses this killer smash as Mopan Tech ties the series at 1 apiece in a game of 5 with the 26-24 score. Unfortunately, Mopan Tech would not win another. San Pedro High took the next 2 sets 25-19, 25-20 to win the 2013 National male title.

Now let’s check in with the Smart 13and under football tournament. On Saturday at the MCC Court, Mario Rivera is in traffic and falling down, but nevertheless gets the goal for Hattieville United on an obvious goalkeeper error. Rising Stars do come back when Andres Velasquez picks up this loose ball and beats the keeper to tie the ballgame. With the game in the balance, the Hattieville goalkeeper comes up with this magnificent save as both teams settle for the 1-1 tie. In the matchup between 3rd World and Survivor, Justin Menzies opens the scoring with this powerful to give 3rd World the 1-zip lead. Dante Fabro then gets the call on this penalty conversion and his strike makes it a 2-zip 3rd World lead. Jalen Myers makes it a 3-nil lead with this right foot strike. And then Justin Menzies is at the right place at the right time to slap this ball in for his 2nd goal of the match and the 4-zip big Win for 3rd World.

In other results from Saturday, Brown Bombers and City Boys batted to a 1-1 tie, Belize Elementary and Collet Strikers settled for a scoreless stalemate and Ladyville Jaguars jolted Young Stars in a 2-zip blast. Five matches are scheduled for November 16th at the MCC Grounds beginning at 10 a.m. Now here are the results of the Belize City Mayor’s Cup from Saturday’s play at the MCC Grounds. Old Road Arsenal handled Ladyville in a 4-1 rout while Kephawn Pawn Shop crushed Kulture Yabra 7-1.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
