Woman charged in assault of police officer

A Belize City woman has been charged for verbally and physically assaulting a law enforcement officer. Twenty-five year old Shawn Godoy of Fern Lane in Belize City was today arraigned for aggravated assault, threatening words, communicating with a prisoner and resisting arrest. According to P.C. Edward Castillo, the ruction started on Monday afternoon when Godoy went to the Queen Street Police Station to visit a detained prisoner. Castillo said when he told Godoy that conversing with a prisoner without permission is against the law; she merely looked at him and continued her conversation. The officer said he then asked Godoy to leave the premises … but before walking away she hurled some choice words at Castillo, telling him that she hated the “effing” police.

That would have been the end of it, but according to the cop, Godoy returned about fifteen minutes later … this time asking him to speak to the prisoner. Still feeling the sting of her previous remarks, Castillo told Godoy she will have to go through the proper procedure and get permission from either the sergeant or inspector. But instead of doing so, Godoy ignored protocol once again and struck up a conversation with the prisoner. Godoy was asked to leave the premises, but instead of consenting, replied, “weh you wah do, you can’t arrest me.” Castillo said that’s when he came from behind his desk and told the unruly woman to once again leave. When Godoy stayed put, Castillo said he touched her shoulder and told her she was under arrest for communicating with a prisoner. Upon hearing this, Godoy is said to have swung her hand in the direction of the officer’s face, telling him not to “f” with her and then tried to run away. The officer said when he grabbed her arm and started to escort her to the cell block; Godoy turned and slapped his face. According to Castillo the woman then picked up a padlock off a desk and threw it at his head, telling him “I wah kill you.” Godoy today pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail of three thousand dollars by Magistrate Margaret Gabb.
