Jacker rides into arms of the law
A Belize City youth is tonight facing charges of theft after riding straight into the outstretched arms of the law. Around eleven-thirty Saturday night, twenty-three year old Sandra Chi was walking down North Front Street when she was approached from behind by a man on a bicycle. According to Chi, that man–later identified as Leon Savery–grabbed her handbag and rode off in the direction of the Swing Bridge. The robber’s escape was thwarted, however, when he rode straight into a police constable near the bridge. The officer stopped the suspicious suspect and took him into custody. The nineteen year old Savery has been charged with theft and handling stolen goods and this morning appeared before Chief Magistrate Herbert Lord. He was granted bail of three thousand dollars, which he met, and was ordered to reappear in court on June twenty-third. According to court reports, Chi wanted to drop the charges, but was not allowed to do so.
